It has become extremely difficult for new authors to find a literary agent, let alone a publishing house. Furthermore, publishers appear and disappear, they sometimes pay royalties and sometimes don't, agents retire or change careers...

In addition to the above, most publishers require that a new author be represented by an agent. Publishers also often ask authors to do their own promotion for the book, and many require the author to purchase a minimum amount of copies as part of their contract. All that for a meager 10% or less royalty. So, in the end, is there any real advantage to dealing with a publisher? What are new authors to do in order to see their books published? It used to be that authors did not have much of a choice if they did not want to spend tens of thousands of dollars and face many obstacles to publish the book themselves. However, with the advance of technology, authors now have new options that are extremely interesting.

If authors have to assume the task of promoting their books and have to purchase copies themselves for a small royalty, they might as well publish themselves for less money and a much larger royalty!

There is a solution called on-demand self-publishing. On-demand publishing takes away the burden of having to purchase many copies of your own book. It means that the book will be printed according to demand, just-in-time, rather than being printed in many copies at great expenses right from the beginning. All that authors have to do is purchase one (1) proof copy. That is it, nothing more!

At first, the book is offered on the Internet, on sites such as Amazon.com and CreateSpace.com, an Amazon division. Of course, authors who want to provide physical bookstores with copies of their books will have to purchase some books at wholesale price (a far better price than what publishers are actually offering), but they are under no obligation to do so. This makes it very affordable for authors, for the very first time. It is an incredible new opportunity!

For instance, an author can now publish a book for less than $50 including printing and shipping of the proof copy, which is done in less than two weeks from the deposit of the finalized file of the manuscript. The author's share on the sales from Amazon and eStore are in the range of 50-60%. Then, the author could choose to purchase a few copies (at an average of less than $8 per copy) to promote the book and, after selling some books on Amazon.com, the author could use the proceeds to purchase some additional copies for bookstores and organizing book signings to further promote the book.

While there are many services out there offering self-publishing, very few offer a complete service that includes printing and a listing on Amazon.com and other important book sellers sites.
